Portland

Portland’s location on two bays provides great water activities.  Including excellent Birding. Indian Point Park and Pier, a 333-acre public park called Sunset Lake is lined by hike/bike trails, its marshlands are perfect for birding, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and sailing. 877-643-2475

Padre Island National Seashore

The longest remaining undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world and home to  the most important nesting beach in the U.S. for the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle. Visitors Center has small museum, bookstore, concession stand, observation decks, restrooms and showers. Semi-primitive and primitive camping. $10 per car 7-day permit. 361-949-8068

Padre Balli Park

On the north end of Padre Island, Enjoy 375 acres of Beachfront park. Required parking permit $12 for annual pass. Camping/RV info at the office near Bob Hall Pier. 361-949-8121

Museum of Hispanic Culture

Exhibits represent 20 different Hispanic countries. In the Lichtenstein House in Heritage Park, 1617 N. Chaparral. Tues-Sat 10am-2pm. 361-879-0336

Mustang Island State Park

This 3,954-acre park has 5 miles of beach front. Campsites and day-use areas, Daily fee or state permit required. 800-792-1112

King Ranch

Probably the most famous ranch in the world! The home of American ranching, this 825,000 acre working ranch is a National Historical Landmark. Guided tours of the Texas size ranch depart from the visitor center. Call for schedule and pricing. 361-592-8055

Heritage Park

Home to twelve beautiful Victorian homes the oldest built in 1851. Guided tours  Mon, Thurs & Fri 10:30am-noon, $6, 12 under $2. 361-826-3410

Fulton Mansion

Fisherman’s Wharf Deep Sea Fishing

Cast off with the professionals. Their state-of-the-art catamarans are  stable, fast, climate controlled and  equipped with a full galley. Fishing party boats and full charters.
